Looking through Hayao Miyazaki’s storyboards and rough concept art for his films always inspires me. It’s incredible how simple and rough they are, yet the idea is conveyed so clearly, and he even colors many of them!

Trying to unlock some of his secrets through osmosis, I did a couple studies. The top is a study of a painting I found in the Hayao Miyazaki Image Board book. I tried to imitate his watercolor style in a digital medium, keeping it as rough and loose as possible like the original. The three things I notice the most when looking at his roughs: Miyazaki is a master of simple gesture, composition and color design.

The bottom one is a study of one of Kazuo Oga’s backgrounds for Spirited Away. I was trying to get a feel for how he lights his paintings, for Oga is not only a master of realistic detail, but of how to create the perfect mood using lighting.

Hey everyone! I’m not dead! I apologize for the lack of any new updates - lately I’ve been a lot of work on Premium Oppa’s YouTube channel; shooting, editing videos and moderating our social networking accounts is no slim task, and although things are moving slowly I’m still pleased with the experience I’m getting from it. Film and video production has always been a passion for me, and it’s my dream to work in the film industry in some aspect… Where, I’m not sure. I have my ideas, but I feel that with experience comes changes in thought, and to get too attached to one idea is not good. As Bruce Lee said, be like water. It can flow, and it can crash, and that is my mindset right now; be constantly pushing towards my ultimate goal, but flexible and open to new pathways.

As long as you keep the big picture in mind, I believe anything you undertake will aid you in the long run.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well with their own work and projects. Keep at it!
